In spite of the above 335 advantages, the Epiphone Casino and Gibson ES-330 are underrated guitars. Single coil pickups have a nice clear tone (described as chimey by many). Yet the coil size of the P90s gives a fatter and sometimes more growly sound than Fender single coils produce. The Casino is definitely fatter and more airy than a 335. They're great for jazz but they can also do rock and blues very well. 335s, however, seem slightly aimed more for rock and blues. But they also have a nice jazz tone. I would say the Casino is better for a cleaner sound and the 335 is better for overdrive. From the hollow body, neck shape, P-90's, screaming feedback, and lack of sustain, it is a different animal than a 335. I love the Casino and I've owned a couple, so I'm not talking out of my ass. My Epiphone ES-335 compares favorably to Gibson's ES-335 and it only cost me $324. I do recall the Casino when made in Kalamazoo was similar to the ES-330 but the Kalamazoo Epiphones were a different breed. Charlie, thanks for the comparison, that is what I am wondering. Do the current standard casino's hang in favorably with the ES-330's. I have a killer ES-333, and have played dud 335's I wouldn't trade for it. The 335 (OK and the 175) is the Gibson I'd REALLY recommend an in person try out before buying unless you're trying a specific year with exact pups, even then you can get one that's heavier or lighter in the same year affecting the sound.
